  • The shameful dividends of immigrant bashing - International Herald Tribune: In the rush to blame foreigners for real and imagined social ills, Europe's anemic birth rates, aging population and hard-to-fill jobs are forgotten. Without large infusions of foreign workers, the tourist industries that many European countries depend on would be understaffed and the cost of construction would soar. None of this has stopped Europe's politicians from stoking fears of immigrant crime, welfare burdens and foreign ways.

  • The Phoenix > Lifestyle Features > White hunters, black hearts: "Scambait ing turns the tables on Internet con men. But when the clever pranks turn dangerous and degrading, where does the moral compass point?" This sums up a lot of the thoughts I had when I first saw 419eater a few years ago: just a vaguely troubled and uncomfortable feeling.

  • The Observer - 'Why do the Italians hate us?': "'In the days after the girls died a Catholic priest visited us and apologised for the local people on the beach, who he said had misunderstood the situation. I asked him why the Italians hated us, why they looked at the bodies of two dead children and smeared on sun cream and he had no answers. He wept and told me the Roma were still God's children. I told him it doesn't feel like it. We are the ones the Italians blame for the poverty outside the camp. That is their own making, not ours, not my children' s fault.'&q uot;

  • Is Debito Still Relevant? | Japan Probe: These days 99% of the Japanese I encounter acknowledge me without surprise, awkwardness or resentment. And the meaning of ?gaijin? has changed. Now it?s basically equivalent to the English word ?foreigner? which, because Japan doesn?t have a monopoly on xenophobia, also has negative connotations. I think it?s best to avoid both words if possible. In Japanese, ?gaikokujin? sounds more respectful, and in English ?non-Japanese? is perhaps best. Having said that, neither ?gaijin? nor ?foreigner? are inherently derogatory words, there?s no reason to call out the word police or tear off on a diatribe just because someone happens to use either of them in conversation. There still are problems. Japan hasn?t suddenly become an Arcadian paradise of racial harmony. There are still issues for Debito to tilt at?the government?s foreign trainee program comes to mind?but if he insists on equating the G-word with the N-word, nobody is going to take him seriously.
